3. Catfish are part of the ray-finned fish group. They are known for the barbels that look like the whiskers of cats. This type of fish can range in size from small to very large depending on the breed. They are bottom feeders so this is where to catch them.
4. Walleye is a type of perciform fish that lives in freshwater. This fish lives mostly in the Northern United States and Canada. It can be referred to as a yellow walleye at times to tell it apart from the now-extinct blue walleye, a species of walleye that used to live in the southern areas of the Great Lakes.
5. Pike or the northern pike is a carnivorous fish that like freshwater or water that is brackish. This fish lives in the northern hemisphere in Canada, the United States, Ireland and Britain for examples.

I'm a catfish lover by nature and here I'll show you how to make catfish baits that will help you reel in the fattest of cats. I'm constantly at the lake with a lot of lines in the water at all times. Whether through the warm months of summer or into the depths of a frigid winter, I can show you how to reel in a cat no matter what the weather forecast with my time-tested homemade catfish baits.
Many new catfishermen think that you have to buy catfish bait from the local bait shop. Yet as time passes, you'll come to realize that most guys lugging in the heavier cats are fishing with baits that they make at home. These homemade catfish bait recipes are what sets the men apart from the boys. Catfish seem to like a variety of different baits throughout the year. What may work one day in reeling in the fat cats may leave you coming home empty-handed the next. An important note is to keep track of local conditions. Introduce yourself to other local fisherman and find out what the catfish are biting on on a daily basis. I, along with many other cat lovers have always caught more catfish, more often than not, when chumming. Chumming is basically pre-baiting an area with small bits of the same type of bait you are fishing with for the day. If you're fishing with tuna, then a tuna chum should be used to draw the catfish into the area of water you plan to fish. Now I know you're ready to get your hands wet, so to speak, so on to the catfish bait recipes.
How To Make Catfish Bait - Homemade Recipes

The simplest of all cat fish bait recipes is the age-old hot dog. Simply cut up the hot dogs into one inch slices and push them up into a treble hook. Now you can stop there, but one of my favorite additions to the old hot dog catfish bait is to get a mason jar several days before going fishing and putting the cut up (one inch slices) hot dogs into the mason jar. Then thoroughly cover the hot dogs with garlic salt. Put on the lid, shake the jar ever so often and keep in the fridge until ready to go fishing. Cats love 'em and I'm sure you will too.

Next on the list of catfish bait recipes is the grand-daddy of all catfish baits, and that is the time-tested chicken liver. People have been catching catfish on chicken livers since the beginning of time. The only problem with using them is that they are slimy and fall off the hook easily when casting out into the rivers and lakes. So here's a simple 20th century fix that will keep those chicken livers on the hook. If you own a dehydrator, you just cut out some wax paper to fit your dehydrator trays and then lay out the chicken livers flat onto the wax paper on the trays. The chicken livers will take about three days total to dry out. You want them to dry to the consistency of beef jerky, pliable yet dried. For an added plus, sprinkle some garlic salt over the chicken livers as they are drying. Another great catfish bait recipe that will have you cleaning catfish for supper.

The last catfish bait recipe I'll be offering here is for meat-eaters. Whenever your wife (or husband) is cooking any meat in the kitchen and there are trimmings to be taken from the meat, save those meat trimmings for catfish bait. I've even yanked in a few catfish in my days with just plain old chicken fat. I swear all catfish love garlic, so be sure to spread the garlic around whenever possible.

Many anglers know about the great success of using alternative flavours and in particular natural flavours rich in bioactive components that turn fish on! Here are some unique suggestions on how to create your own rose and rosehip flavour baits and to reap loads of sweet rewards in cold water or warmer conditions!
You can very easily produce your own secret homemade baits with alternative rose type flavours. Of course you might simply add a rose flavour to any of your favourite boilie base mix. But I very much doubt that you have ever used rose flavoured spod or stick mix, rose flavoured pellets or ground baits! It might seem a bit more normal these days to use something like aniseed essential oil, or fennel oil or geranium oil. Using rose oil is such a different alternative, and proven highly successful.
Rose oil is very powerful and you only need a few drops mixed in liquid lecithin from CW Baits, further mixed with water mixed with icing sugar or glucose syrup for example, and you have a really potent flavour. If you are feeling hard up you can even use rose water and boost this with intense sweetener and perhaps betaine HCL and a sweet flavour enhancer.

Probably the most universal of all natural baits is the worm. The more easily obtained common garden worm is a good standby for the big, pencil thick variety found in shady gullies between hills along sub-tropical rain forests. They can also be found in marshy, fertile river flats. The more active the worm, the better it presents to the fish. Worms are also bred as commercial ventures for anglers and these days, also for composting and environmental destruction of waste matter. One of the best methods to harvest worms is to lay a hessian bag in a shady spot, keep it permanently damp and place vegetable peelings underneath it.

Another recommended bait is the grub. Many anglers swear that the odour which emanates from the maggots of the big moths when pierced by a hook can be detected from a great distance by fish. Grubs have a reputation as top bait for the inland angler. Grubs can usually be located by removing the top few inches of soil from around the base of a tree. They can also be located in the timbers of trees where that live out their larval stage of their development. They kill the tree as they eat their way into its heart and small holes are a giveaway as to their presence.


In some areas frogs are suitable bait. Not a popular or well-known bait, but nevertheless the small brown frog usually found under loose bark is the pick of the frogs as bait. The tadpole is effective bait for trout when thrown in the shallow streams among weed beds.
Another bait anglers can use when others are in short supply is the freshwater mussel. These hard-shelled molluscs can usually be found at the river edge or on the beds of the rivers and their soft, fleshy centre is bait some fish find irresistible.
The flat bottom of a farm dam is a good place to find crayfish baits. Their presence is usually indicated by small burrowing holes at the edge of the water line. They can also be found under rocks in small streams and creeks. They are generally active at night and have even been seen scampering across dew-covered ground. In winter they tend to burrow deep into the mud of the bottom.
The freshwater shrimp, probably the most successful of all the freshwater baits, are seasonal in their availability. Most fish will rarely turn away from a nicely presented freshwater shrimp and at the height of summer they are present in vast numbers. Traps are the best method of capturing the shrimp. Usually a bucket shaped metal container with holes and baited with a dead fish is an efficient method of capture. Perhaps their sense of smell leads them into the bucket to feed off the fish and when retrieved from the water, the bucket drains of water, leaving the entrapped shrimp behind. Areas to search for the shrimp are at the water's edge next to weed, rocks and algae-covered timber. They have a similar appearance to the prawn and are excellent bait for any species of fish.
Live fish are excellent bait and it is a widespread practice to use them. In dark, murky waters the big-mouthed fish are attracted to these baits by their movement more so than their appearance or characteristics.
Before using baits such as those mentioned, local regulations must be checked as it is prohibited in some trout waters to use such baits which may compromise the habitat. Indeed the European Carp, which is in plague proportions in Australian rivers and destroys the habitat of the natural fish, are a classic example of what can happen when live bait are released and allowed to thrive. Baits used for trout are almost always live and usually consists of the small water-based animals from the same area as the fish. Trout do appreciate variety however and can also be taken using grasshoppers, beetles, moths, ants, worms and insects.
