As the weather begins to heat up in many areas and spring is officially underway, it can mean only one thing. Bass fishing is also beginning to "heat up" as well. In this article I will outline a few tips for catching large mouth bass this spring and summer. There may be no better time to fish for large mouth bass than the spring so these tips will certainly come in handy. The bottom line is that if you are interested in catching large mouth bass, this article is for you.
These tips are being listed in no particular order and all have their place in any bass fisherman's arsenal.
  1. Sharpen Your Hooks - Many bass fisherman make the mistake of not sharpening their hooks as often as they should. Dull hooks are the single biggest reason that large mouth bass are missed. Carry a hooks sharpener with you and sharpen your hooks religiously to avoid your hooks becoming dulled.
  2. Wear Polarized Glasses - Polarized fishing glasses enable you to see into the water by cutting through the glare from the sun and the glare from the sun being reflected off of the water. Wearing polarized glasses is especially helpful when fishing for bass in shallow water situations, such as fishing beds during the spawn.
  3. Fish At The Best Times - Being on the water when the bass are the most active is very important to anyone who is interested in catching large mouth bass. The best way to make sure that you are fishing at the best times is to pay attention to the weather and moon and plan your bass fishing trips accordingly. These two forces of Mother Nature have an incredible impact on the feeding behavior of large mouth bass and using this information to your advantage as an angler is of the utmost importance.
  4. Use Realistic Bait Fish Imitations - Anyone who has ever fished for bass knows how effective crank baits can be and there may be no more effective crank bait for bass than a truly realistic bait fish imitation. When it comes to tips for catching large mouth bass, this tip could easily be number one. Don't just use crank baits, but use crank baits that imitate bait fish in a realistic manner.
  5. Top Water Baits Are Effective - Top water baits are very effective at catching large mouth bass. A key is to fish top water baits when the water is completely flat, which many times means fishing in the early morning or late evening when there is little wind. Baits such as the Zara-Spook and the Pop-R are some very popular and effective top water baits to use for bass fishing.
  6. Don't Forget About Live Bait - Live bait is an often overlooked bait when it comes to large mouth bass fishing, but is shouldn't be. A key with fishing live bait, such as shiners for example, is to rig your bait in the most realistic way possible. The bottom line is that live bait is a very effective method for catching our friend the large mouth bass. Just make sure you use quality bait rigs to rig your live bait so that your bait looks as natural as possible.
The bottom line is that these tips work and will help anyone catch more large mouth bass on their next bass fishing outing. Add one or all of these tips to your bass fishing repertoire sooner, rather than later.

Big Large Mouth Bass - Three Tips to Catch Fat Fish

Everyone is on the hunt for big large mouth bass. We're all looking for the kind of fish we can hang up on the wall and brag about to our friends, but how can we ensure that we out-fish everyone on the boat? How can we make our day on the lake fun and productive instead of boring and frustrating?
Bass fishing is all about experience and knowledge. As with any sport, you need to practice and gain wisdom in order to be the best. There are three main ideas you need to focus on when perfecting your bass fishing skill.

1. Know Whats in Your Tacklebox
Most anglers fall into a comfort zone when it comes to their lures. We all find a favorite kind of lure, and we stick with it. This could be very detrimental to our fishing productivity.
Knowing how to use every lure effectively is an important task. This will allow you to fish each spot to its potential.
2. Learn About Bass Patterns
Bass are blooded creatures. What does this mean to us?
This simple fact will dictate when and where you fish. The metabolism of bass is controlled by the water's temperature.
Paying attention to weather patterns and learning the reaction of bass to the weather will help you to fish at times when you know the fish will be actively feeding.
3. Look for a Honey Hole
Searching for sweet spots on the lake isn't always an easy task, but it is an important one. If you find one bass, you'll probably find many more close by. How can you find good fishing spots?
Purchase a topographical map of your lake. Look for structures in the lake such as drop offs and points. These are hot spots for bass. Once you find a structure, fish all the way around it. Bass will typically inhabit only a small area of a structure.
It takes many anglers years to find big large mouth bass, but its really not necessary. You need time to gain wisdom, but you need to focus your efforts towards three basic ideas in bass fishing. This way your time on the water will be spent more effectively.

Small Mouth Bass - Surefire Lures And Foods They Can't Resist!

The two foods small mouth bass love above and beyond all others are live minnows and crayfish. They will on occasion eat larger fish and other organic manner. But by and far their preferred food is live minnows and crayfish.
Of course when a small mouth bass is especially hungry, it will eat anything in the vicinity resembling food. In situations where it's preferred food is scarce, small moth bass have eaten crickets, moths, grasshoppers and other insects. However, this fish is usually a very picky eater and prefers chasing and eating live minnows and crayfish.

It has also been said that small mouth bass eat a lot of frogs as well. This is more than likely not true. Frogs live in marshy places or near weed beds. Typically there is little or no current flowing and the bottom is covered with several inches of slime and mud littered with dead branches and sunken logs. The water in these types of places is stagnant, dirty, and warm. Small mouth bass prefer cool, clear and flowing water. However these places make excellent large mouth bass habitat who lie in the mud close to shore and eat large amounts of frogs.
Crayfish, which make up a large part of the small mouth bass diet, unfortunately doesn't make good bait. For whatever reason, it is very difficult to catch these fish using hooked crayfish as bait. It doesn't seem to matter how the crayfish bait is presented, the fish refuse to accept it.
As far as artificial lures go, small mouth bass have been taken on small spoons, small minnow lures and small top water crank bait. Retrieve spoon lures at a moderate to fast rate. Too slow a retrieve will allow the fish to examine the lure too closely and will not be effective.
Using live minnows is very effective. However best results using live minnows are achieved by checking the bait often and making sure the minnow is swimming. Dead minnows are a big turn off to small mouth bass. Keep a fresh minnow on your hook and you'll have your kreel filled in no time.

Small Mouth Bass - Where To Find Them!

Small mouth bass prefer clean, cool water. Unlike large mouth bass, small mouth bass thrive in water flowing over clean sand and rock. You will not normally find them in weed beds or muddy pools unless food is scarce or they become frightened by storms.
In rivers and streams, if you approach quietly with care, on a bright day you'll be able to see the fish suspended in mid-stream with their heads pointed into the oncoming current. This is where they thrive, in clean, moving well aerated water. An excellent place to cast is under a low hanging branch near the bank, especially behind a log or other obstruction that creates an eddy pool.
In small lakes small mouth bass can usually be found anywhere there is the slightest sign of water movement. The best place to check first is where creeks or small streams enter the lake. Especially if the water entering the lake is clear and cool, you'll find them holding at the entrance of these creeks and streams for days. Other good places to check for small mouth bass are anywhere eddies are forming; in narrow channels, around sunken logs and large rocks. In other words, anywhere water is moving, curling or being agitated.
During the summer when temperatures rise small mouth bass typically find a sheltered spot to hide in until late in the afternoon. The best time to fish for small mouth bass on hot summer days is approximately two hours before the sun goes down to just about an hour after sundown. When they come out of their daytime hiding spots, small mouth bass find food by watching the surface of the water against the light background of the sky above. At this time of day these fish won't attack or jump at their food like large mouth bass do. Instead they will execute a semi-circle maneuver under the food and take it from below without coming out of the water. You can easily recognize this feeding behavior by watching for surface swirls which are the main characteristic you will notice when they are feeding this way.
When a storm approaches or the water gets really rough, these fish become frightened and head for deep water or hide in a muddy place. When this happens they may very well stay hidden for two or three days after the storm has passed and things have calmed down. However when they do come out of hiding they will be ravenous and will hit virtually anything resembling food.
